Harness and Collar Sizing

One girth measurement, taken 5 cm (2 in) behind the widest part of the ribcage, converts straight into an XS-XL harness size.

Wrap a soft tape around the ribcage 5 cm (2 in) behind its widest part, with the dog standing. Keep the tape snug but not tight. That girth figure is the only number a harness chart asks for.

Standard harness charts run from XS at a 30-40 cm girth up to XL at 80-100 cm, with lettered steps between. Pick the band your measurement falls inside; if the number sits on a boundary, the fit test below decides which size stays.

On narrow screens, swipe or scroll the plate sideways.

Collars are chosen by weight class, not girth. Dogs over 10 kg wear flat collars 2.5-4 cm (1-1.5 in) wide, which spreads the load across the neck. Toy breeds under 5 kg need a narrow 1-1.5 cm (3/8-5/8 in) band.

Finish every fitting with the two-finger test: two fingers (2-3 cm) must slide under each strap, and a gentle backward pull on the leash must leave the gear in place. If the dog can back out, the fit is wrong. Run the same test before every walk, not just the first.

The same measuring logic covers the rest of the kit: the Dog Crate Size Chart page uses nose-to-tail length, and the How to Fit a Basket Muzzle page uses snout clearance.

  • XS fits a 30-40 cm girth
  • XL fits an 80-100 cm girth
  • Lettered sizes step between those two ends of the chart
  • Measure 5 cm (2 in) behind the widest part of the ribcage
  • Close every fitting with the two-finger test on each strap
